When someone searches for a service near them, Google shows a map with local businesses. Your Google Business Profile (earlier called Google My Business) decides whether you appear there. It is free and one of the most powerful tools for local customers.

Step 1: Create or claim your profile

Go to the Google Business Profile website, search for your business name and claim it if it already exists, or create a new one. Use your real business name exactly as it appears on your signboard.

Step 2: Choose the right categories

Your primary category matters most. Pick the most specific option (for example "Dental clinic" instead of "Doctor"). Add a few relevant secondary categories.

Step 3: Add accurate details

  • Address and map pin location
  • Phone number and website
  • Opening hours, including special holiday hours
  • Services or products with descriptions and prices
  • Attributes like wheelchair access, women-led, online appointments

Step 4: Verify your business

Google may verify by video, phone, email or postcard depending on your business. Keep proof such as your signboard, shop interior and business documents ready for video verification.

Step 5: Upload real photos and videos

Add your logo, cover photo, storefront, interior, team and work samples. Profiles with fresh, real photos tend to get more engagement. Upload new photos every month.

Step 6: Post updates regularly

Use Google Posts to share offers, events and news. Regular activity shows that your business is active.

Step 7: Collect and reply to reviews

Ask happy customers for reviews with your direct review link. Reply to every review politely. Never buy fake reviews — it violates Google's policies.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Adding keywords to the business name
  2. Using a virtual office or someone else's address
  3. Different phone numbers on different listings
  4. Ignoring questions and negative reviews
